Murphys’ Irish Days

Open rain or shine! Thousands of people from Northern California and beyond gather in the historic gold rush town of Murphys to honor its Celtic heritage and to celebrate as only the Irish can. Its picturesque Main Street is filled with booths offering hand crafted items, original art, photographs, tasty food, wine, and other beverages. The day begins with a pancake breakfast.  At 11 a.m. the swirl of bagpipes heralds a parade of marching bands, classic cars, horses, community organizations, novelty entries. Continuous entertainment will feature singers, dancers, musicians, and jugglers throughout the day.  Pony rides for the young ones and Renaissance actors encamped in the park.  Raffle for an exciting trip for two to Ireland.

September 27th 2014, Columbia State Historic Park presents the 32nd Annual Fiddle and a Bango* Contest, which is an all-day contest where musicians compete for cash prizes in six categories: fiddle, banjo, mandolin, guitar, vocal and miscellaneous, while spectators relax in lawn chairs. Registration for contestants is 9 to 10:30 am when competition begins and continues until about 4:30 pm, except for a lunch break featuring a Chili Cook-Off.

 *Bango was a misprint on the contest T-shirts back in 1983, and the name stuck!

September 27th to September 28th 2014, Tuolumne hosts the Memorial Hall Antique Fair. The huge open space and wood floors of Tuolumne Memorial Hall complement the antiques while the local park provides ample shaded parking. Friends and Fans of Sarah…and Music Lovers,Joining together with the community to provide support and raise money for friends in their time of need is what makes being part of a small community so great.  Please use this information to help us inform the community about this benefit concert at the Fallon House Theatre, coming up on December 17th .  Performers rarely seen in Tuolumne County, as well as local favorites are coming together to raise money for singer songwriter Sarah Elizabeth Campbell who has been diagnosed with stage 4 liver cancer.  Sarah’s music and charisma have attracted big talent to play in Columbia on her behalf with showstoppers such as Peter Rowan and Laurie Lewis.  This is going to be a night to remember, so please help fill those seats by adding this to your public service announcement or community calendar.  If you have any questions, please call or email me.

Columbia SHP presents A MERRY MYSTERY in the style of Wilkie Collins. Participants will be guided through the decorated town during the walking play as clues are provided to solve some mysterious events. The evening tour will end at the Bixel Brewery with refreshments for all. Reservations required. Tours leave every 15 minutes starting at 6:30 pm on Friday and 5:30 pm on Saturday.
